A couple of weeks ago I went down Finnich Glen, a deep sandstone gorge a few miles north of Glasgow.
The glen is 100ft deep in places and often only about 15ft wide. Travelling its full length requires several swims and plunges into deep pools. Luckily I’d double-wrapped my camera in waterproof bags before starting out.
The walls are green and the water’s red and it’s generally a pretty spectacular place, though completely hidden from the road.
This shot isn’t as sharp as I’d like it – the gloomy light at the bottom of the gorge means you need a tripod for long exposures and I’d left mine behind, so this was taken handheld. I’m planning to go back soon.

Christopher, what a beautiful photo. Glad I found you via Twitter/Joanna Young. I’m now a subscriber!
Thanks for the comment, Brad – you know how much I love them!
Found your blog by tracking you from Joanna’s blog. These are some handsome photographs. But honestly tell me, did you really swim with your camera double bagged? Wow! What we photographers will do for great shots!
Hi Bo, Welcome. Yes I really did have to swim. I knew getting down the gorge would involve at lease a thigh-level wade, so I packed my camera in a sealed waterproof liner inside a rucksack, and wrapped it in plastic as well just in case.
The unexpected benefit of the liner was that it had just enough air in to keep the pack floating while swimming, though I was still pretty nervous when I unwrapped it before shooting.
